The opening of the bowls green at Cricket Field Lane, the home of the Budleigh Salterton bowlers, is always an exciting day and as the blue skies appeared on Saturday afternoon so did the club members as over 30 bowlers enjoyed their first outing of the season, writes David Roberts.

Ladies’ captain Bobbie Vanstone bowled the first bowl as the traditional Spider competition (nearest to the jack in the middle of the green) began the proceedings with long-standing member Bunty Hudson taking the prize.

A Round Robin competition was then enjoyed by all with the winners, Rob Jerrard, Mike Shaw, Bunty Hudson and Gerry Roberts, receiving a bottle of wine for their plus nine score.

A Dutch tea was served to end a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon and the club now get down to the serious business with matches against Ottery St Mary, Heavitree and Madeira over this week.
