Budleigh Bowling Club launched a new season in glorious bright sunshine over the Easter weekend.

A ‘round-robin’, organised by Captain John Vanstone, was for many the first opportunity to re-acquaint themselves with the rigours of outdoor bowling!

Fortunately the recent spell of fine weather meant the ‘going’ was not too heavy and, after a few loosening-up ends, the jack was reachable.

Bill Barber won the ‘spider’ and received a bottle of brandy, with the proceeds going to the captains charity, Budleigh Hospicecare

Tradition demands the president of the Budleigh Games Club delivers the first ‘ceremonial’ wood and Richard Odam duly obliged..

The winners of the ‘round-robin’ were Colin Nex, Stuart Spencer and Bobbie Vanstone who were rewarded with bottles of wine.

The Ladies versus Gentlemen’s match, played in triples format, was also blessed with good weather and was another hugely enjoyable event. Bill Barber, Stuart Spencer and George Woolacott, on plus 16, were the highest winners and as for the overall result – well, it would be a trifle ungallant of this male scribe to delve further into the scores!

It was good to see past President and Captain, Ron Tyler, making a winning return to the rinks after his recent surgery.

The popular Thursday evening ‘umbrella’ resumes on April 24 with assembly by 5.30pm. The first of the Saturday club coaching sessions will take place on April 26, when Tony Dealler will welcome established and new bowlers alike. Enjoy the season and keep fingers crossed for fine match days.
