Budleigh bowlers in fine win over Exonia

PUBLISHED: 09:51 20 December 2017

The past week was a quiet one for all at Cricket Field Lane as the Christmas break approaches, but a home mixed friendly against Exonia has raised the festive spirit as the Budleigh team recorded a fine win overall, winning on both rinks, writes David Roberts.

The rink of Tony Lim, Ann Vincent, Di Dixon and skip Gerry Roberts played well together and took control early on to win through 21-10, whilst Dick Mitchell, Tony Hanson, Joan Cowing and Mo Bond were involved in a close encounter towards the end and held on to take their rink 16-13 giving the home teams a 14-point victory.

In the Budleigh Coast Wealth Management Evening League, the Budleigh Falcons and Hawks came up against each other and it was the Falcons who had the overall win 40-25, although the rinks were shared one a piece.

The Falcons of Gerrard McCarthy, Don Huish and skip Brian Crook had a good win 27-10 against Stephen Lacey, Dick Mitchell and Brian Evans, but a close victory on the other rink saw the Hawks of Brian Ward, Peter Nicholls and Brian Goddard win through 15-13 against Keith Edwards, Bob Gooch and Terry Escott.

The Hawks were in action again two days later against the Maderia Robins, and, whilst the points were shared, a fine win on rink two for the Hawks (Brian Ward, Peter Burch and skip Brian Goddard won 24-11) was not enough to win overall, as the rink of Peter Nichols, Dick Mitchell and Brian Evans came up against a Robins team in fine form.

The Tuesday morning triples competition saw wins for Marion Lacey, Peter Burch and David Tomlinson, 20-15, and for Hilary Medley, Keith Edwards and Tony Lim, 19-9.

A very successful Grand Buffet Draw was held in the clubhouse on Saturday night where over 40 members attended and a big thank you to Paul Griffin and his team for an entertaining evening with fine food and festive spirit.

The coming week sees the Budleigh Hawks play the Budleigh Falcons in the Coast Wealth Management League and the club travel to Maderia between Christmas and the New Year in a mixed friendly.

The club wish their sponsors and members a very happy Christmas and New Year and thank them for all their support during 2017.
