The Budleigh Bowlers registered their second consecutive win against a touring side in seven days, but it was a close call as they won by one shot 96-95 against St Albans, writes David Roberts.

With wins on four out of the six rinks there were some close encounters with the best Budleigh rink being that of Tony Lim, Reg Ringsell, Margaret Ringsell and skip Di Dixon as they kept the lead from early on and won 16-9.

Anne Clarke, Ann Membery, Peter Cooper and Bill Barber, fought back from an early deficit to finish strongly 20-16, whilst Ann Vincent, Mary Grove, Brian Ward and Gerry Roberts again fought back from behind at the halfway stage to win through 16-14.

Derek Stanley, Gwen Hurst, Tony Barnes and Mo Bond had the closest game of the day as they gave away nine shots in two ends, but dug deep to score the all important winning shot on the last end to take it 19-18.

In the Exeter and District Over 60s triples league the men continued their good form taking six of the eight points in an overall win against Uffculme A 38-30.

Bill Barber, Paul Griffin and Andrew Cardy were the stars of the afternoon as they mastered the green to win by twelve shots 23-11.

Tony Barnes, Peter Hillman and David Roberts were always in their match on the other rink but a determined fight back from their opponents saw them lose out by four shots 15-19. Nevertheless the team consolidate their fifth position in Division Two.

As the internal competitions get underway, Brian Summers and Bryan Membery progressed to the next rounds of the men’s championship and handicap competition respectively, whilst Penny Weeks won through to the next round of the ladies’ 106 competition.

Up and coming fixtures see the men and ladies play friendlies against Sidmouth and mixed friendlies against Bitton Park and Seaton whilst the men look to gain ground on Sidmouth A in the Over-60s Triples League.

The ladies play Crediton away in their Over-50s Triples League and the club look to make it a hat-trick of wins against touring teams as they welcome the bowlers of Bishops Cleeve.
