Budleigh beaten by Otters, but then win at Exonia

Archant

Heavy rain again this week put paid to a full bowls week for the Budleigh bowlers, but the sun shone for an exciting encounter as the members travelled to Ottery St Mary where a close match was edged by the home team, 113-100, writes David Roberts.

The pick of the Budleigh rinks was that of Tony Lim, Mo Bond and Leighton Burston who took full control and won handsomely 33-8, restricting the home team to scoring on just five ends out of 18.

A 19-10 win for Eileen Burston, Bunty Hudson and Skip Rod Davidson was the only other successful rink as Ottery won on the other four.

However, the triple of Peter Hillman, Ralph Cartwright and Gerry Roberts will be kicking themselves having been four shots up with only two ends to go only for the Ottery bowlers to dig deep and score seven on the last two ends. All in all, it proved to be a great afternoon, and, as usual, fine hospitality from the Ottery bowlers.

Fortunes were reversed when Budleigh visited Exonia in a mixed friendly and came away with a ten shot win, 66-56, with Budleigh winning on two of the four rinks rinks.

Derek Stanley, Joan Shaw and Leighton Burston played well together whilst Peter Hillman, Gerry Roberts and Di Dixon also had a good game to win through as the away team came home victorious.

Brian Summers, Peter Hillman and skip David Roberts were wondering how they lost in their Devon Section Three Unbadged triples final against Madeira having been in a comfortable position 15-5 up after 13 ends only to allow their opponents to score 10 in the last five ends and draw level.

Going into a sudden-death play-off rink, belief was still running high, but it wasn’t to be, as the Madeira men nicked it by one shot.

The trip home although only a short distance was a sombre affair as the Budleigh team reflected on what could have been. This was their first defeat in nine consecutive matches over the past two seasons.

The forthcoming week sees the Over-60s men at home to Honiton while the ladies’ are in action in the Over-50s League against Seaton and there are friendlies against Pinces Garden and touring side Southam United. Saturday sees the Centenary Cup being held at Cricket Field Lane.
