Brixington Blues Under-10s travelled to high flying Heavitree Dynamoes in their Exeter and District Youth League KO Cup quarter final, and came away with a hard fought 3-2 victory, writes Alan Diprose.
Blues got off to a tremendous start when the unmarked Jake Diprose steered home a cross from Tom Humphry with barely a minute gone.
This proved to be just the start of a fine advert for junior football with both sides producing end to end football of the highest calibre.
When Dynamoes attacked they were mostly repelled by the defensive duo of Luke Buck and Matthew Edworthy, but when the rearguard was breached , keeper Will Cooper was in inspired form with many first class saves.
Will White and Sam Diprose were linking up well , and White had a couple of near misses which would have given Blues a cushion , but it was Dynamoes who managed to equalise before the break.
Into the second half and Sam Diprose fed White to nudge Blues ahead. With Owen Shaw now on in midfield he stopped many of the Dynamoes attacking moves.
Tom Humphry rifled a shot on target but Heavitree’s keeper was also having an excellent game. With the clock running down Heavitree grabbed the goal that their play had deserved to take the match into extra time.
Despite the heavy pitch and tiring legs, both sides continued to put on a show for the excited crowd, but it proved to be a moment of Will White magic that won the game. He picked the ball up outside the box, and dribbled past two players before slipping the ball past the keeper.
