Exmouth Sea Angling Association recently returned from what has now become their annual fishing trip to the Isle of Wight.

The island offers a plethora of marine species throughout the year, many of which are pretty much unheard of from local beaches closer to home!

This year, the week long trip produced over 25 different species, amongst them bass, golden grey mullet, smoothounds, plaice, dover sole, spotted ray, smalleyed ray, turbot, brill and black bream, to name but a few!

Sadly, wind and weed ensured the popular storm beaches in the south west of the island like Blackgang, Chale and Atherfield remained virtually unfishable.

However, although fishing was restricted to more sheltered locations, this didn’t stop members reporting some very good fish during the trip.

Exmouth angler Shane Milliner recorded personal bests for smalleyed ray and spotted ray while former ESAA secretary Si Boeree landed his first ever brill while fishing at Yaverland.

The Boeree brill of 2lb 8oz not only took the long vacant ESAA club record for the species and equalled the island’s shore record, it also weighs in at an impressive 166 per cent specimen!

With good mixed bags for most members this year, next year’s trip to the island is already confirmed and members are looking forward to another top trip in 2013.
