Police Social Club A launched their defence of the Exmouth Snooker League title, but were narrowly beaten at home by last season’s runners-up, East Budleigh C.
Carl Rowsell 79-73 and Mark Rock 80(30)-39 had them one point from victory before Rob Marsden 64-46 and Paul Hayman 70-45 took them to five frames.
A black-ball decider for Barry Bentley 69-60 clinched a fine win for the visitors.
East Budleigh A, keen to shake off the mantle of last season’s wooden spoonists, started with a 4-1 win over Otterton A.
Paul Milford 43-19, Graham Ward 100(27)-42, Mark Auton 68-60 and Dave Hawkins 58-50 were denied maximum points by Morley Martin 66-37.
Number Nine A came within a point of a 5 nil result as John Evens 60-29 won the second frame for the Police C.
Iain Callander 87-58, Gordon Parker 76-32, Dan Brown 79-41 and Dion Newcombe 87(33)-50 had to settle with a 4-1 result.
John Sharland 56-39 and Chris Sharland 42-35 of the Number Nine B shared four frames with Pete Gibson 67-34 and Tom Caygill 62-44 at the Police B, before Dave McCarthy won the fifth and deciding frame 50-36 for the Number Nine side.
