Bishop bucks the trend at Exmouth Harriers

20:26 04 September 2014

Family life, injuries and possibly a shift towards quality rather than quantity in racing are possible explanations for there being fewer performances by Exmouth Harriers members to report in 2014, writes Dave Eveleigh.

Richard Bishop though has bucked the trend and is racing more. In mid-August he joined Hugh Marsden to cover some 14 off-road miles at the Race the Train event at Tywyn in mid-Wales. Hugh was 2nd in his 55-59 age group and 46th overall in 97:25. Richard finished 114th in 1:42:50. Nearly 800 took part, of whom just under 200 were faster than the Talyllyn Railway tourist train. Both Hugh and Richard had the coveted ’Y’ beside their name in the column headed “Beat Train”. Earlier in the year Richard posted two results for Half Marathons run as part of the Coastal Trail Series, both in South Devon. In February he was 33rd of around 300 finishers in 2:00:35, then in May was 12th of about 200 in 1:52:57. In July Richard raced over 10 miles at Wellington, a rare opportunity to tackle a distance that has declined in popularity over the last 30 years. Here Richard was 12th of 92 in 71:06.

More recently Jon Garrity was the latest Exmouth Harrier to run in the demanding Lustleigh Show multi-terrain 10km race on the August Bank Holiday, where he was 14th in 44:38. A day later (August, 26) at the Barrel Inn Fell Race in the Peak District Tony Hatchard finished 11th in 44.58 over six-and-a-half miles and 1500 feet of climbing, an encouraging result with just four weeks of training since beginning a comeback.
