Otterton drag racing young star Baxter Williams raced to a major title when he was part of a thrilling day’s action at the Dakota Raceway, Smeatharpe on Remembrance Sunday.
The 12-year-old rode in what were the wettest conditions of the season for the drag racers.
However, the youngster was clearly undeterred as he smashed a course record that had stood for many years – that of a rider completing 46 rides in a single day – by riding no fewer than 60 times, and he twice set new personal best times.
He was able to clock a new PB that is now 17.7 seconds for the quarter mile distance and a new 60 foot personal best time of 2.4 seconds.
Making it all the more remarkable is that he has been crowned Dakota Street bike champion in what is his first full season of drag racing with the South West Straightliners!
Young Baxter has been superbly supported through the season by so many people and wishes to extend special thanks to Trevor Duckworth and his team, Mark ‘Wolfie Smith’, Mark ‘Skinny’ Patman, Troy and Paulo at Lets Talk mobiles, Dan Potter at Exmouth Motorcycles, Ash from Exmouth Tyres, Big Pauls of Cotford and Frank Lyons, the latter who rescued Baxter and his father with keys for the Aprilia when they were lost.
Baxter’s dad Gary says: “Baxter really would not have been able to achieve what he had, had it not been for the superb support he has got from a wide range of sponsors.
“His bike is now set for a rest over the winter with a major overhaul planned before its first outing in March of next year and a visit to Santa Pod. Not that he will be idle in the coming months as he is now getting back on his motocross bike, keeping his fitness and reactions in tip top shape.”
