Archant

Seventy-four seniors played in the postponed May stableford at East Devon on Monday, writes Paul Willoughby.

The weather was benign to start with then, bang; at about 10.30 when most of the players were out on the course, the heavens opened and the Augusta Wannabees were deluged with rain. Some didn’t bring their waterproofs and paid a heavy wet price. A lot walked in vowing never to play the game again (but we all know they will!), when all of a sudden the rain stopped and the benign conditions returned. By that time the early retirees had no option but to drink coffee and accept that their score would be regarded as a No Return.

The computer into which we have to enter our scores is quite humourless and totally logical – like Mr Spock on Star Trek – and makes no allowances for the weather, the fact that we are wet through or the fact that we nearly had a birdie when actually we scored a bogey. We want to be able to put into that little box in the score card, ‘My ball lipped out for a birdie but the centripetal force (go on, look it up – you know you want to!) threw the ball further away and I missed the returning putt because I then had a sharp left to right borrow’. Oh no; the card says you had a bogey so get used to it!

Notwithstanding the cloudburst, there were some good scores and the winner of the monthly Stableford was Alan Baker with 39 points from a handicap of 11 now 10. Well done, Alan.

The other lading scores were: 2, Jeremy Price, 38, 19 (now 18); 3, Mike Saunders, 38, 24,(now 23); 4, Lewis Maby, 37, (20); 5, Mike Knapton, 37, (now 19); 6, David Adamson, 37, 17 (now 16); 7, Andy Scott, also 37 (7).

There was a twos pot of £69 to be shared between seven players. There was one two of particular note – Peter Brockman had a two on the par four eleventh hole!
