Archant

Robert Axon was a founder member of Phear Park Bowling Club in 1911, writes Lawrie Harries.

He was a fine bowler holding what the club believes is a unique county record as he skipped a rink which achieved two ‘hot shots’ – a maximum - in the same game. Remarkably, he did this in two different games.

He was elected club chairman in 1940. Mr Axon donated a silver cup to the club as a means of raising funds for local hospitals through an annual competition. This became redundant after the NHS was introduced. However, the club decided to rename the trophy the Axon Cup and continued the annual competition.

The Axon Cup remains an important event in Park’s season and this year the trophy was won by a rink from Madeira – Jill Perrin, Millie Powell, Keith Weekes and Mike Powell (skip).

Phear Park’s annual tournament closed with a very closely fought mixed pairs final. This was won by the Feniton couple Joan and David Evans who defeated Sheila and Norman Owen from Topsham by three shots.

The ladies pairs were played on a round-robin basis and won again by Diane Dixon and Averil Barrett from the Budleigh club. The runners-up were Gill Harding and Joan Evans.

Winner of the men’s singles was Madeira’s Mike Marks. He showed excellent form throughout the week; on his way to the final he beat both winner and runner up from last year. Marks defeated Phear Park’s Robert Smith in the final.

The men’s pairs were again won by Peter Sheppard and Mike Lewis from Belmont (Exeter) who overcame the Heavitree pair Terry Chown and Sid Baxton.

Park ladies playing in the unbadged triples league secured three points with a draw against visitors Crediton. Glenda Pope skipped Jackie Cruse and Christine Hatchard to an 18-6 win, but this was not quite enough to secure overall victory.

A disappointing defeat against Exonia followed, but two points were salvaged through a win by Janet Martin, Joy Mottershead and Glenda Pope (skip).

Park answered a call for assistance from neighbours Budleigh by sending a rink to meet tourists from Bristol. Treating hosts and visitors with proper respect Park sent a high powered rink made up of Club President, captain, vice captain and secretary.

Understandably the Bristolians were a little overawed and Park’s officers’ won by 10 shots.
