The annual prize giving took place at East Devon golf club last Saturday evening, writes Paul Willoughby.

The evening was well attended by the winners and many club members.

The cups and trophies were presented by the club captain, Stephen Phillips and ladies’ captain, Shirley Pressey, ably assisted by the vice captain Dennis Chivers and the Ladies’ vice captain, Di Willoughby.

There were too many winners to name them all and it would be unfair to name some and not others, but Stephen Phillips did make one award which met with the members’ great approval.

This was an award to Paul Newcombe, our head green keeper who, in 2001, achieved the course record scoring a gross 61, net 59. For most of us that would be in our dreams only!

The award was his framed score card, signed by his co-player on the day, Bill Wentworth. Paul was delighted with his award and modestly told the assembled company a few of his shots on the day – well done, Paul; we are all very pleased for you.

The evening also saw the presentation of the club’s cheque to Paula Hullett representing the captains’ 2012 charity, Childrens Hospice South West. Throughout the year the club had raised the staggering sum of £14,650.

On behalf of the charity Paula thanked the club and gave an account of one child ‘who will never reach adulthood’ who would benefit by the donation – a worthwhile cause indeed.

The evening finished with an excellent supper for about 90 people.
