Archant

Beer Primary PTFA members casted an anxious eye towards the West on Sunday, anxiously hoping the strong wind would not be accompanied by heavy rain for the Beer Blazer series of races. Fortunately for most of the morning the sun shone and a cracking time was had by all, writes Dave Mutter.

The first races off were the 10k and 5k events run over very challenging terrain, including the 1k Hooken beach and the climb up the cliff and a sting in the tail by way of the Park Road fields.

AVRs Tim Lenton was the victor in the record 131 field for the 10k in 43:35, over a minute ahead of John Nolan with Steve Millward of Gloucester AS, third, 45:05. Amy Greenhalgh had a super run, cruising to victory in the ladies event, sixth overall, 49:46. Jane Alison of Mud Crew Tail runners was second lady, 15th overall, 54:32 and Kate Harris third, 30th overall, 56:53. There were some fine performances from the AVR gang with Alex Todd fifth, 49:04 and young Ethan Day 20th, 55:52 beating dad Jon by three seconds. Ian Apps was 27th, 56:39; Eleanor Wood 33rd, 57:30; Carol Austin 37th 59:26 and Steven Lewis 44th 1:00:42. Hanna Bramley had a great race to be 48th, 1:02:16 with Alan Morbey 50th, 1:03:48.

The next six had a ding dong battle all the way round, with the final order being young Cameron Hill 53rd, 1:04:07; Dave Mutter 54th 1:04:39; Steven Maclure 55th, 1:04:42; Margaret Pearce 57th, 1:04:55; Dan Ayling 58th, 1:04:56 and Richard Hale 64th, 1:05:30. Andrew Sayers was 75th, 1:07:27; Anna McLoughlin 78th, 1:07:55; Chris Hill 79th, 1:08:00; Mark Harding-Perrott 85th, 1:09:41; Rebecca Lippett 90th, 1:11:45; Tracey Anning-Beckett 100th, 1:13:38; Angela Kerr 108th, 1:15:13; Crista Bramley 121st, 1:22:29; Martin Kerr 123rd, 1:22:46 and Kirstin Harwood 126th, 1:25:42.

In this race the best of the human spirit came to the fore when a Honiton runner took a tumble a fellow runner comforted her while another ran back to get help from the coastguards thus ruining their time for the run.

There was a record 43 finishers in the 5k won by young Rory Morgan from Beer representing Sidmouth College in 24:27, with AVR’s Ollie Caute second, 24:33 and Honiton RC’s Iain Ross third, 25:12. AVR’s Mia Bartlett was the first female home, 10th overall, 27:57 with Florence Swann from Honiton RC second female, 11th overall, 29:06 and Beer’s Lizzie Trewick third, 17th overall, 33:57. Ben Franklin had a fine run finishing foutrth, 26:43; Stephen Morbey 12th, 29:06; Matt Thurgood 14th, 30:35; James Trewick, running with his sister Lizzie was 18th, 33:57 and Emma Lewis 25th, 37:31.

The one-mile junior fun run attracted a large field of 79 eager participants and the girls winner was Holly Bigger with Imogen Waterhouse second and Hatty Tremlett third. Cameron Bryson was the boy’s winner followed by Harry Gird with Ethan Gribble third.

Many thanks to the hard working members of the Beer Primary Scholl PTFA and their sponsors Pecorama, Wadden Farm Estate, Fred Hansford Carpets, R and H Signs, Clinton Devon Estates and Beer Head Caravan Park for putting on another great event that will hopefully earn around £2,000 for the PTFA. Also thanks to the many AVR helpers including Janet Woodward, Sue Venn, Garry Perratt, Paul Johns and Richard Hale.
