The South West Junior Orienteering Squad meets a number of times a year to develop the technical skill of orienteering in its Juniors.
As the British Long Distance Championships are in The Lake District this year the squad travelled to the Lakes over half term to get in some training on quality terrain.
This means that the contouring and other features are very intricate and so it provides excellent experience and development opportunities for the Juniors.
The squad includes two from Sidmouth College – Ellie Stone (16), who has been with the squad for three years and Emily Keenan (14), and three from The King’s School in Ottery St. Mary – Joss Knight (17), Grey Grierson (14)and Zak Francis (17).
Twenty four juniors, from 12-18 yrs look part in the training.
There is also an Inter Regional Competition each year at the end of June which they are working towards getting selected for. The competition this year is in East Anglia.
If you are interested in getting involved in orienteering, Devon Orienteering hold new weekly sessions at Sidmouth Sport Centre on a Wednesday 4pm 5.30pm. Contact Tess Stone on 01297 553421.
