Woodbury 2, University 6
It was very much a case of ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ as Woodbury looked a shadow of the side who had staged County Cup heroics just seven days before.
The game started evenly, but it was the Woods who where asking questions of the visiting keeper. Ryan Smith tested his handling with a drive from the outside of the box which was well dealt with.
Wayne Rowsell looked odds on to convert from 10-yards, but his shot flew inches wide midway through the first half.
On the half hour the students took the lead when a well-flighted cross from the left was headed home for what proved to be the only goal before the break.
The Second Half started with a good tempo, but it was University who were getting on top.
They doubled their advantage on 55 minutes and, five minutes later it was 3-0.
Woodbury got one back on 70 minutes when, after good work from Paul Rowsell on the left, the ball was squared to Rich Hill who lifted it up and over the University glovesman.
Five minutes later any hopes of a dramatic come-back were quashed when the students netted a fourth, this time from a right wing raid.
Shortly after Alex Hughes was upended in the box and he tucked the resultant spot kick, but just two minutes later the University made it 5-2, and they added a sixth in the closing stages.
Woodbury boss Adam Reid said: “We must not get too down-hearted about the result. Alex Hughes was our Man of the Match, he played very well. It was one of those contests where we needed to take the chances that came our way, had we done so the outcome may well have been very different. We may well make changes for our next outing as both Jonny Killick and Kev Pitt are nearing match fitness after summer injuries.”
Woodbury team: Brad Evans, Rhys Perry, Charlie Page, Brett Gloyn, Michael Simpson, Steve Hunt, (Craig Leaman 50) Richard Hill, Alex Hughes, Wayne Rowsell (Alfie Cleave 50), Ryan Smith, (Declan Bourne 70) Paul Rowsell.
On Saturday Woodbury entertain Axminster Town reserves in another Division Four game.
