Chulmleigh 7, Woodbury 0
Woodbury suffered a fourth defeat of the Fresha League Division Three season and saw the home side leapfrog them in the table as a result.
The Woods travelled without a number of key squad members owing to a combination of work, holidays, Christmas outings and even a funeral with no fewer than ten players unable to travel!
It left Woodbury boss Adam Reid being forced to squeeze himself into a team shirt and play 90 minutes for the first time in 26 years!
After ten minutes of even-steven play the home side took the lead with a neat turn on the edge of the box and a good finish leaving Simon Evans in the Woodbury goal no chance.
Not long after a moment of indiscretion by Dave Vickery saw him pick up a straight red card to make the Woodbury task that much more difficult!
The ten men battled on willingly, but it became harder as the game wore on and the home side made their extra man pay.
Evans made a fine save before the second home goal which was followed swiftly with four more to leave Woodbury 6-0 down at the interval.
After the break the Woods opted for a more defensive approach and it paid dividends as the tactic to get players behind the ball as quickly as they could restricted the home side to just one more goal.
Dan Fulls switched from a striker role to play centre back. Boss Reid took on the right back job, but he needed to leave the pitch for a short spell to tape up a broken boot!
Post match Reid said: “Simon Evans did a very good job in goal, in fairness probably preventing double figures in the First half. Craig Leaman was decent and robust. JG Leaper annoyed the opposition and Dan Fulls did a sterling job dropping into the back five for the second half.”
The Woods Man of the Match award went to Gareth Davies who put in a typically hard-working shift.
On Saturday Woodbury entertain Sidmouth Reserves.
Woodbury team: Evans, Glanvill-Ford, Perry, JG Leaper, Vickery, Tidmarsh, Leaman, Reid, Davies, Tapp, Fulls.
