Exmouth's first team ended their regional South West league season with an impressive double over Lydney RFC in Gloucestershire.

They became one of only three teams to complete a home and away victory over The Severnsiders.

It only took four minutes for the hosts to take the lead with the first of their four tries, earning a bonus point.

The traveling Cockles, in their fourth away game on the bounce, hit back quickly when skipper Dave Bargent set off smartly, catching the home side defence short, conversion from Geroge Meadows, 5-7.

The rest of the half went the way of Exmouth.

Lewis Geran swept down the left wing to finish in the corner, Mr Meadows missed the extras attempt, in a breezy swirling wind.

Cockles' forward pack had the upper hand, with Charlie Gibbings bustling about the park in to contact, setting up some lovely handling from the rest of the team.

The boot of George Meadows kept the scoreboard ticking over with two penalties, with a sweet drop goal, 5-21 at the break and Exmouth unlucky not to be further ahead.

In a similar pattern, Lydney scored after five minutes, then Meadows hit another penalty, 10-24.

What ever the home side coach said to his players at half time had the desired effect.

They hit back with two tries, one converted, the score at 22-24.

The small but smiling travelling support had seen a draw coming until a missed conversion attempt.

With interchanges happening during the final 20 minutes, the Cockles were determined to take away any other points opportunity.

A break down field, strong running from Nick Headley led directly to James Clarke smashing over at short range, Mr Meadows with a conversion to make it 22-31.

Both sides collected yellow cards during the game, Ollie Turner had a short cameo, coming off the bench, only to be told to take 10 minutes for not rolling away.

He had been warned, then missed the final nine minutes.

A sixth place finish in the league, the Cockles now concentrate on Devon Cup action.

A second leg to be played at Brixham on Saturday, April 20.

That was not the only success for the club.

Cockles Colts booked their place in the Devon RFU Bowl Final, to be played on Sunday, April 21.

An impressive 57-7 win at the Imperial Ground on Saturday, over a plucky Wellington RFC colts side, means the Exmouth U18s now take on Totnes RFC Colts at Rackerhayes, Newton Abbot in a couple of weeks.

Simon Tate, head coach, will be pleased with the application the lads showed in blustery, sticky conditions.

The boys now move on to try and clinch their first piece of silverware, in their inaugural season in colts league rugby.
