What a contrast in the last two Grizzly’s, writes Dave Mutter.

The 2012 race saw baking hot sunshine and hard going, but the 2013 race was run in freezing conditions, with a soupcon of snow, sleet and rain and very slippery underfoot and of course more road due to the cliff collapse in Old Beer Road.

The cub run route was not too slippery, but once the deepest outposts of Branscombe were reached even the downhills were hard to run on and of course there was the mighty bog to contend with.

None of this had any effect on the top runners with Jeff Pyrah of Hastings AC winning the 20-mile race in an unbelievable time of 2:24:07m with Exmouth Harriers’ Tom Merson second in 2:24:11.

AVR runner Matt Clist finished a magnificen third in 2:31:33.

The ladies winner was Isobel Wykes from Mud Crew Trail Runners, 57th overall in 2:59:44.

Nicky Brickmann of Titan Tri Sport took second place in 3:00:54 and Samantha Kelly of Wootton Bassett Hounds was third in 3:04:52.

AVR had its highest ever number of runners in the top ten with Tim Lenton 5th, 2:35:57; Patrick Devine-Wright 6th, 2:6:52 and Simon Bayliss 8th, 2:37:48. Tom Bland was 19th, 2:47:34; James Gular 72nd, 3:03:27 and Martin Lascelles 110th 3:10:13. Debbie Payne was 172nd ; Jon Day 176th, Rupert Pady 22nd, Graham Newton 267th, Tony Wood 271st, Eleanor Wood 318th. Mark and Geoff Woodward were joint 357th, Roger Bramley 362nd, Gareth Walker 451st, Adele Foxwell 525th, Chris Keeffe 551st, Stephen Reynolds 616th, Ian Clements 641st, John Larcombe 728th, Fiona Powell 773rd and James Whiffin 776th.

Siobhan Reddy was 851st, Jim Bee 866th, Simon Davey 872nd, Wayne Tooze 879th, Margaret Pearce and Alison Bowskill joint 924th, Richard Dodge 943rd, Wilf Walsh 1022nd, Susan Tubbs 1080th, Steven Lewis 1088th, Gavin Warren 1105th, Sue Venn 1187th, Kelly Dack and Alison Gould joint 1196th, Janette Mack 1274th, Laura Bailey 1290th, Samantha Tooze and Claire Moles joint 1296th, Jayne Aplin 1322nd, Alan Morbey 1355th, Christopher Driver 1378th, Gill Day and Janet Woodward joint 1381st and Diane Newton 1386th. 1447 runners completed the full grizzly.
