Archant

I was very pleased to read in the Journal (November 7) “Big U-turn: Rex to be honoured”, as a result of the Journal and the family of World War One flying ace Sub Lieutenant ‘Rex’ Warneford VC.

The campaign has changed the Government’s mind so that the hero’s name will now be on an ‘honour plaque’ as part of the Government’s scheme to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

However, do I read that this ‘honour plaque’ is to be located in Phear Park, a mile away from the centre of Exmouth and somewhere you have to be lost to find?

Surely this ‘honour plaque’ needs to be in the centre of Exmouth near The War Memorial.

Coincidentally, on Remembrance Sunday and there were thousands by the War Memorial – but not in Phear Park!

On the local television news there was an item about Finn VC, who was born in Bodmin, and his ‘honour plaque’ is going to be in the centre of Bodmin, outside the Shire Hall, not in some park miles away.

In 34 years living in this area I have been once to Phear Park.

Anyone with any sense would know that more people go through by the War Memorial when coming to Exmouth, be it by train, bus, bicycle or car, either to use the shops/cafés in the vicinity or onwards to the beach or elsewhere.

There also is another reason to have the ‘honour plaque’ in the town centre and that is security – the area around the War Memorial is a busy day and night as well as having CCTV – the same cannot be said for Phear Park.

Wanton vandalism seems to be a modern day way of life – hardly a month goes by in Exmouth when there isn’t a broken plate glass window or graffiti sprayed on something or other.

I noticed the newly opened Ash Indian restaurant in Victoria Road has had one of its largest windows smashed and the owners can now look forward to paying higher insurance premiums for the pleasure it gave the vandal who smashed the window.

So, Exmouth, if you can’t get the seafront right, don’t make the same mistake with its heroes.
