An Exmouth dementia care home is preparing to begin a new building project that will enable it to provide more specialised care for its residents.

Rose Lodge Care Home in Isca Road currently has 24 rooms, plus day care provision.

It is planning to build a new extension that will form a self-contained community for residents with early to mid-stage dementia – with the existing building housing those with mid to late-stage dementia – a total of 33 residents in all.

Having received planning permission last year, the home has now secured the required funding and work is set to begin in the next month, with completion in February or March next year.

Owner Peter de Groot said: “What we have observed is that people who are at a similar stage of dementia mix together better.

“With two groups we can tailor activities for the right stage. [At an early stage of dementia] people are physically more active, intellectually more capable, and they become over time quieter and more passive.

“We are very active and do a lot of different activities, but particularly when people are at an early stage, and still have some awareness of what’s going on and their own condition, it’s much nicer for them to just mix with people at that stage.”

He added that the new build has been designed to resemble semi-detached cottages, to keep it a domestic size, and that Rose Lodge had received input on the plans from the University of Stirling’s dementia services development centre.
