Work has begun on replacing railings on Budleigh seafront, after the town council stepped in to cover the cost.

The railings, above the Old Morgue near Steamer Steps, were in a poor condition, and previously gave way causing a man to fall.

Fixing them should have been the responsibility of Devon County Council (DCC) or East Devon District Council (EDDC), but amid fears that tight council budgets might mean the work never got done, Budleigh Salterton Town Council decided to step in, paying around £15,000 for the new railings, out of a total just short of £20,000 which also includes new lampposts, from its town improvement fund.

Work began this week on installing the railings, which will span around 20 metres, with the lampposts set to be installed at a later date, when the weather improves.

Town council finance chairman Councillor Courtney Richards, who instigated the town improvement fund while serving as mayor, said: “I’m delighted to see the work underway. It’s not our responsibility, but with the pressures on EDDC and DCC they are not going to do it, so the town council decided to go on and do it.

“The seafront is Budleigh’s major asset, and I think it’s important to keep it looking as nice as it can be, and also there is the safety issue.”
