Woodbury: court bans train photo pest

a 46-year-old man from Woodbury has been slapped with a three-year ban from taking photos of anyone in any location after he took 3,000 photographs of mainly women on his mobile phone while on train journeys over a 10 month period.

A railway photo pest from Woodbury has been banned from taking pictures of anyone in any location for the next three years.

A court imposed the unusual ban after Edwin White, of Parsonage Way, Woodbury, took 3,000 photographs of mainly women on his mobile phone while on train journeys over a 10 month period.

The 46-year-old took most of the pictures when he was travelling on rail services between Exeter and Barnstaple in Devon.

Exeter magistrates heard he took 2,900 photos of females – and 481 of them were of a 15-year-old schoolgirl and 93 were of a 21-year-old woman.

The court heard White sat opposite the teenage victim on the train and she had seen him before.

Prosecutor Giles Rowden said: “She felt extremely awkward. He was taking pictures of her on his mobile phone which upset her.”

She found his actions unacceptable and reported the matter to police.

The schoolgirl said she had seen him taking pictures of her over the previous ten months.

One day in November police joined her on the train and she identified White, of Woodbury, Devon. His phone was taken away and analysed.

Mr Rowden said there were 3,000 photos – 2,900 of females though he said ‘none were indecent’.

He said 481 were of the teenager under the description ‘sexy schoolgirl’ and 93 of the 21-year-old under the title ‘sexy girl on the train’.

Mr Rowden said: “He took photos of females he deemed to be pretty, on the train, in pubs, anywhere really. He accepted it was out of order.”

White told the court: “I did it but I didn’t realise how serious it was until this happened. It won’t happen again, I don’t want to go down this road again.”

Magistrates ordered him to carry out 70 hours unpaid work and pay £170 court costs.

But they also gave him a Criminal Behaviour Order for three years which states: “You cannot take any pictures of any person at any location without their express permission.”

The magistrates said: “This is a bit of a salutary lesson. Your behaviour is not acceptable. No one likes pictures being taken without express permission, regardless of looks and where they are. You have been at this for quite some time.”

The court ordered his pictures – mainly taken on the train but also in pubs – should be destroyed.

White admitted harassment without violence on board trains between Eggesford and Barnstaple in Devon between February and November last year, and a second charge of unacceptable behaviour on the railway by molesting or wilfully interfering with the comfort or convenience of another person last November.
