Woodbury Brownies came up with a unique way to fundraise for Exmouth RNLI.

Woodbury Brownies have been backwards about coming forward in fundraising for Exmouth RNLI.

The youngsters recently held a backwards night to raise much-needed funds for the sea safety charity and their efforts raised £294 for Exmouth lifeboat station.

The unique fundraising event started with a song Brownies usually sing to close their meeting, and ended with how the group starts each session.

The Brownies’ efforts were rewarded with a tour around Exmouth lifeboat station, where they saw the new Shannon-class lifeboat, R and J Welburn, being recovered.

Rachael Fairclough, Brown Owl of 1st Woodbury Brownies, said: “‘The trip followed a visit from RNLI education presenter, John Wood, who came to our Brownie hut to tell us a bit about what the RNLI did and about staying safe in the sea.

“We then decided to carry out a sponsored backwards night to raise some funds for what we felt was an important cause.

“All the girls turned up with their uniforms on backwards, some with ponytails on their foreheads.

“We began the evening with our closing song, then we carried out backwards relay races, learning the Brownie promise backwards, a backwards alphabet competition and then finished by taking the Brownie register and news.”

Each Brownie decorated their sponsor forms and prizes were given to those who collected £5, £10 and £20.
