A ‘suicidal’ woman has been talked away from cliffs in Exmouth by coastguard officers.

The incident happened yesterday evening while Exmouth Coastguard officers were training, when they were alerted by police to a ‘despondent’ woman heading for cliffs.

The Exmouth Inshore Lifeboat was launched and headed along the shore while coastguard officers headed along the cliff path towards the woman.

An Exmouth Coastguard spokesman said: “Coastguard officers located the female shortly after deployment and were initially able to talk her away from the cliff edge.

“Subsequently a coastguard officer had to restrain and detain the female for her own safety until police officers arrived and took her in to custody.

“It is rare for any coastguard officer to take such drastic action but it was necessary on this occasion for both the female’s and coastguard officers’ safety.

“The coastguard officer who took this action is highly trained for such events in his full time employment and had the situation fully under control.”
