Royal Navy bomb disposal squad are on route to Exmouth after the discovery of what is believed to be a smoke grenade.

The “device” was uncovered after high winds dislodged the ice-cream kiosk on Queens Drive.

A team from the Royal Navy’s Southern Diving Unit One are currently on route from Plymouth and will determine whether to carry out a controlled explosion.

It is possible that the device was left over from the Second World War – the area was lined with sea defences between 1939 and 1945.

As a result of the find 13 metre area was cordoned off at around 1.30pm– the exclusion zone is near the Bowling Alley.

Police were alerted by the Coastguard.

A Royal Navy spokesperson, added: “We have been told that the device looks like a smoke grenade, but we don’t know as the team are on route.”
