The campaign to save Budleigh Salterton Library can now be seen around the world, after a music video highlighting the cause was released online.

As the Journal previously reported, hundreds of children at St Peter’s School were joined by residents last month, to be recorded singing a specially written song about how much they want the library to stay open.

Having been edited together by local filmmakers and St Peter’s parents Rebecca and Eoghan O’Reilly, the finished video is now available to view on YouTube, and already has more than 1,000 hits.

Jane Parker, a fellow St Peter’s parent and musician, who wrote the song with the school’s community choir, says the video has been well received online and in Budleigh.

She said: “Most people have found it quite moving. We wanted to pull the community together, and we had great fun doing it.

“It’s not the best song ever written, but we only had an hour to teach it to people aged from four to about 80, but I’m really pleased with it. It was about getting the word out there.”

The song and video are one of several elements now running in the campaign to save the library, which Devon County Council has said could be at risk of closure if increased community involvement in running it is not found.

A petition organised by Christine Rogers and Christine Hadley with 1,236 signatures has been sent to the county council, and a Twitter account has been set up called @SaveBudLibrary.

With interest in the campaign growing, those behind it are also looking for someone, perhaps with more experience in such matters, who might be interested in coming in to help manage it.

Anyone interested is asked to contact Jane either via the @SaveBudLibrary account, or by emailing vinceandjaneparker@talktalk.net.
