District bosses are looking at putting up more signs to warn fishermen to take care with fishhooks on Budleigh beach.
The move follows concerns about discarded hooks causing injuries to swimmers, with one child recently having to go to hospital to have a hook removed from his foot, as reported in the Journal last week.
Now East Devon District Council is considering bringing in the signage, and running an awareness campaign at the start of next year’s fishing season.
Councillor Tom Wright said: “Fishermen have as much right as swimmers to use the beach and all we can do is ask they are very careful about the care of their hooks and recognise the dangers that they can cause.”
