Vintage cycle fun at Exmouth

A vintage cycling rally attracted scores of people keen to dress in retro clothing, riding bikes to match.

Scores of cyclists pedalled into the past when they took part in the Velo Vintage event held in Exmouth.

The vintage cycling rally, organised by father-and-son team Alistair and Sebastian Cope, aka Velo Vintage, drew around 100 cyclists who dug out clothes from bygone days and rode bicycles to match.

Alistair Cope, director of Velo Vintage, led the cyclists off across The Strand and up the Exe Trail on his 1935 Hercules tandem.

The organisers said the popularity of the event has resulted in calls for it to be repeated and talks are already in the pipeline for a 2013 ride.

Alistair Cope said: “It seems that all involved are keen for the event to return to Exmouth again for one or more events next year.”

The riders arrived at Topsham’s Bridge Inn at around noon, where they stopped for lunch before returning to Exmouth for an al fresco cream tea, followed by a prizegiving ceremony in The Strand.

Mark Fairhurst won “best-dressed gentleman” and Emma Howard “best-dressed lady”.
