The new Knowle Village Shop has opened its doors, with its owners hoping it will help revive the community.
The shop has been opened at the Britannia Inn by publicans Major Jeff White and Kate Knight, selling essential groceries, including local produce, along with hot pies and pasties and coffee.
Jeff says the shop will allow the pub to better serve the village, and provide a much needed service to residents.
He said: “The modern-day pub must serve its community. We always believed the shop was a crucial element for a community that has previously lost its village shop, its post office, and its church.
“We are trying to prevent the total death of the soul of the community, and our aim as responsible publicans is to bring the heart back into the community, and reassure the local residents that we are here to stay, with their support.
“The shop will help those residents who find it difficult to get into Budleigh. We are not out to take trade away from any other shop.
“What we are trying to do is provide a facility for those villagers who have difficulty in accessing transport and need those essential supplies.
“We are very grateful to those organisations and groups who have supported us with funding, namely Pub is the Hub, the East Devon AONB Sustainable Development Fund, and Making it Local.”
