Otterton residents have taken to their streets with a speed gun to ensure passing motorists travel at safe speeds.

The village’s community speed watch programme, operated by Devon and Cornwall Police, has carried out its first unaccompanied patrols on Fore Street, having previously been supervised by police officers.

Those caught get a warning letter, but after the first two operations drivers had an unblemished copybook, with no-one being caught doing more than 30mph.

The patrols clearly advertise their presence, and are designed to act more as a deterrent to speeding.

Volunteer Brian Major said: “The idea is to slow the traffic, not catch the speeders. The police provide the signs, the jackets and the speed gun.

“A lot of villagers were concerned about speeding traffic through the village, and a few of us volunteered to do it.”

The volunteers say they think the narrowness of the road gives the impression cars are going faster than they are, but believe on early mornings in the summer they will come across speeders.
