Veterans and service organisations are being invited to join a special event in Exmouth to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy.

The event will take place at the D-Day Wall of Remembrance in Phear Park on June 8.

It is being organised by Lionel Howell, who used to organise an annual D-Day commemoration in Phear Park, prior to standing down as chairman of the Exmouth 531st Tribute Fund in 2011.

He was asked to come out of retirement and organise an event this year by veteran Billy Watte from the Sidford area, who sadly has since died – one of many veterans who have passed away since the last event was held.

Determined to respect his wishes, Lionel is going ahead with the event, and is inviting veterans, service organisations and anyone who wants to support them to attend on the day.

The event is still in the early stages of planning, but Lionel would like to hear from any veterans who would like to attend, and is also hoping to arrange fundraising events to cover the cost of the day.

● If you are a veteran, or would like more information, contact Lionel on 01395 276613.
