Police say they have made an arrest following the crash in Looe, involving a coach party from Age Concern Exmouth, in which two people have died.

A spokesman said: “Police investigating the fatal coach collision can confirm the driver of the coach, a 57 year-old man from Exeter, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

“He has been taken into police custody at Launceston.”

The spokesman added: “The bus was operated by Carmel and police believe it was being used for a trip organised by Age Concern from Exmouth.

“Police can now confirm both the deceased are women.”

Police have also said that anyone concerned their relative may have been on the coach can call Derriford Hospital on 0845 1558155.

As previously reported, as well as the two fatalities, seven other people were taken to hospital by air ambulance, and four others by land ambulance.

The remainder were treated at the scene for ‘walking wounded’ injuries.

Pauline Gaunt from the Confederation of Passenger Transport, speaking on behalf of Carmel, confirmed the incident involved an Age Concern coach from Exmouth.

In a statement on its website, Carmel Coaches said: “Carmel Coaches extends our deepest sympathies to those involved in today’s accident.

We are co-operating with the authorities in the investigation of this tragic event.”

Police say they were called to the incident on the A387 at Morval near Looe in Cornwall at around 1pm today, in which the coach collided with a hedge, and have declared it a major incident.

The coach was carrying around 40 people, who police say are all believed to be aged in their 60s and over.

A spokesman for Devon County Council said: “Our thoughts are with all the individuals involved with the crash, and their families. Devon County Council and the NHS are helping uninjured passengers return home this evening, and others requiring care into local community hospitals nearer home. Devon County Council will be supporting all those involved.”

Update: The driver was released on police bail on Tuesday evening.
