The event heard how the previous “year of change” saw the society sell its All Saints Road building and buy and convert Culver House.

Tributes were also paid to the society’s late former chairman Michael Horwood who “led the organisation through a time of some upheaval with unfailing kindness and calm”. Residents were praised but the meeting also heard how one had made a formal complaint during the year and the matter is “ongoing”.

“Recent figures show that we are among the most financially sound Abbeyfield societies in the South West region,” said the chairman’s report to the meeting.

The Abbeyfield Sidmouth Society, founded in 1963, aims to provide a caring home for elderly people, particularly the lonely or frail, where they can have maximum independence with the support and companionship of others and from a resident housekeeper.

l The society will lose a pair of its house chairmen this year and has appealed for committee members to help run its three houses in the town. Contact honorary secretary Philip Atkinson for more information on 01395 512193.
