A Budleigh vineyard is the toast of the town after its red wine was named as the best in the region.
Lily Farm Vineyard, in Knowle village, has won the trophy for the best commercial red at the South West Vineyards Annual Competition.
Alan Pratt, who runs the vineyard with wife Faye, says the award is a major achievement for Lily Farm, as it had to beat competition from much larger and more experienced vineyards.
He said: “It’s the premier competition, judged by a couple of masters of wine, blind tasted, and we came out top. It’s quite a coup for a small vineyard to beat the bigger vineyards.”
Alan says the success of the vineyard, which started in 2005, is down to its ideally suited site, and to good work, both on the vineyard and at winemakers Bagborough Winery.
The red wine award is the first trophy won by the vineyard, and follows a silver medal for its sparkling rose in the English and Welsh Wine of the Year Competition 2013.
