Exmouth’s marathon record breaker Dave Stone is go – as he travels to London this weekend aiming for four in a row.

Dave, 44, who lives in Normandy Close, is an experienced London Marathon runner, who in 2011 swapped his runner’s vest and shorts for a Superman costume – and walked away with the world record for the fastest marathon dressed as a superhero.

He then followed this up in 2012 by breaking the fastest book character record – dressed as Dracula – and in 2013 broke the fastest film character record dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow of Pirates of the Caribbean fame.

Since 2011 another runner has broken his superhero record, so now Dave is hoping to restore his hat-trick by running as Virgil Tracy from Thunderbirds, and breaking the record for the fastest marathon dressed as a television character.

The current record is three hours and 11 minutes, so with Dave’s time last year having been two hours 40 minutes he is confident of beating it, especially as the Thunderbirds costume should be less cumbersome.

He said: “It’s an easily recognisable costume and reasonably easy to run in. I don’t have the cutlass this year, but I have got a little bubble gun I will take with me so I can blow some bubbles on the way round.”

Dave’s family will have added interest in the race this year, as also running for the first time is brother Simon, although they may not see much of each other on the day, with Dave starting from a separate record attempt start line, and of course hoping for a faster pace.

As always, and like Simon, Dave, a member of Exmouth Harriers, is combining his record attempt with charity fundraising, and this year his chosen cause is St John Ambulance, after its members recently came to his aid.

He said: “I did the Grizzly run a few weeks ago, and fell over and cut myself quite badly on my arm and leg, and they helped me immediately. I’ve never raised money for them before, and thought it would be good as they are at all the races and support the runners, so it’s good to give something back to them.”

Dave is collecting donations at Kings Garden Centre, where he works, and visitors can also enter a competition to guess his marathon finish time and win a prize.
