Teachers cycle Britain in a fortnight

A former Exmouth headmaster and his son have cycled the length of Britain and raised £630 for charity.

Vincent McCloskey, the former head teacher of St Joseph’s RC School, and his son Simon, a teacher in Darfur Western Sudan, cycled a gruelling 958 miles in just 16 days.

The pair set off travelled John O Groats and to Lands End, the first time they have ever attempted anything of this magnitude.

The cash raised will go to the charity Kids for Kids, the only organisation created to help the children of Darfur.

All the money raised will pay for goat, which will help families to be self sufficient.

On the final day the pair were on the road by 6am to face the dreaded Cornish hills.

Vincent said: “We slogged our way past Truro, Redruth and Cambourne and stopped at Hayle for coffee and a doughnut.

“As we approached Penzance the sun came out briefly put then a heavy sea mist came down and we found ourselves battling an increasing headwind as we struggled up the short sharp hills for the final 12 miles.

“We rolled into Lands End at 11am, side by side even though Simon thought the tactic a bit risky with some of the road users but I was not going to let a moment like this pass.

“How many guys get to have an adventure like this with their son?”
