Police carried out a crackdown on taxi passenger safety, resulting in five cabs being banned from the road.

Police removed five taxis from the road in East Devon and Exeter in a crackdown to improve passenger safey.

Earlier this month officers from Devon and Cornwall police teamed up with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA), Immigration and HM Revenue and Customs fuel testing, stopping 50 vehicles over two days in Exmouth, Honiton and Exeter.

Some 27 vehicles stopped were found to be committing offences, police said, ranging from defective lights to the driver not having an identity badge. Some vehicles were found to be in breach of more than one offence.

Devon and Cornwall police immediately banned any vehicles found with defective tyres, a loose battery, or failing to carry a first aid kit or fire extinguisher.

A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Anyone who is a fare paying passenger should expect to be able to travel in safety.

“For the police to put vehicles off the road immediately demonstrates how seriously we treat breaches of the regulations but we will work hard to prevent the public being at risk.

“It is disappointing that less than half of the vehicles checked were free of any defects and we would not rule out further checks in the future.”
