Talks aplenty in Topsham and other news

A number of talks are lined up to take place in Topsham over the coming weeks. Read this and more.

BORNEO TALK: The latest talk to be hosted by the Topsham Birdwatching and Naturalist Society is being given at Matthews Hall.

The talk will be given by Richard Hargreaves, and will be about a visit to Borneo.

It will take place on November 23 at 7.30pm. Admission will be free for members, and £3 for non-members.

HAPPY TALK: The Topsham Allotments and Gardens Society is hosting its latest garden talk.

It takes place at St Margaret’s Church Rooms on November 22 at 7.30pm, and will be given by Sarah Holdsworth of Bee Happy Plants. Admission costs £2 for members and £3 for non-members, including a cup of tea or coffee.

AMAZING JOSEPH: Topsham’s annual Oboussier lecture is taking place later this month at Matthews Hall.

This year’s lecture – organised jointly by the Topsham Society and Topsham Museum – will be given by Paul Auchterlonie of the University of Exeter, and will be on An Exeter man in Algiers and Mecca, the amazing adventures and achievements of Joseph Pitts (1662-1739).

The lecture will be held on November 22, starting at 7.30pm. Admission will be free for members, and £2 for non-members.

ST MARGARET’S MAJESTY: Clyst Valley Choral Society is holding its autumn concert in Topsham.

‘Glorious Majesty’ will be staged at St Margaret’s Church on November 24 at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7 from Topsham Bookshop, or will be available for £8 on the door.

CLYST GRANTS: Community organisations in Clyst St Mary are being invited to apply for a grant from Bishops Clyst Parish Council.

Application forms are available online at www.bishopsclyst.btck.co.uk/Noticeboard. Applications must be received by noon on December 31.

NATIVITY TALK: A talk on a celebrated nativity painting is being held at Topsham Art Room.

Art historian Maggie Giraud will be talking about Hugo van der Goes’ The Portinari Altarpiece. The talk takes place on November 25 at 6.30pm. Seats should be pre-booked, and admission costs £10 at the door.

The Art Room’s latest exhibition, of paintings and drawings by Benedict Rubbra, opens this Saturday.

WINE TASTING: An acclaimed wine school is moving to Darts Farm.

Devon Wine School was founded six years ago in Crediton by Master of Wine Alistair Peebles. It is hosting a wine tasting on November 20 between 6.30pm and 8pm.

BEGINNERS’ BIRDS: St Margaret’s Church’s Birds for Beginners event takes place this Saturday, at 9am, with a two-mile walk, beginning at Holman Way car park, to identify winter birds, followed by coffee and cake at St Margaret’s Church Rooms at around 10.30am. The event is free to attend, but prior booking is preferred by calling David Byrne on 01392 758557.
