An Exmouth lifeboat man has gained new emergency communication skills which will prove vital during a major sea rescue.

Volunteer crewman Andy Williams joined six other RNLI volunteers from across the region at the charity’s support base in Saltash to learn about short-range search and rescue communications.

The specialist course included studying the art of clear communication during a major incident at sea.

RNLI instructor Steve Howard said the group all received a RYA (Royal Yachting Association) short range course international certificate of competence and the RNLI’s search and rescue radio operators certificate.

Mr Howard said: “Crew volunteers need to have a good working knowledge of the equipment and practises involved in distress communication.

“All those attending this two day course have used state-of-the-art communication simulators with touch screen technology to help them rehearse the procedures required during a rescue scenario.”
