TADS panto back to entertain

PUBLISHED: 09:27 19 November 2012

The annual Topsham pantomime is set to take the stage once again, with the Topsham Amateur Dramatic Society (TADS) presenting The Sleeping Beauty.

The show will be onstage at Matthews Hall at 7.30pm every day between November 27 and December 1, with a matinée performance on the final day at 2.30pm.

After disagreements over the booking of the hall in previous years all parties are now working together amicably, and TADS has now purchased a new stage which can be taken down in just 20 minutes, making it easier for them to share the hall with the Saturday market.

TADS chairman Marlene Gardner, who has been putting on pantomimes in Topsham for more than 40 years, is looking forward to another successful production.

She said: “It’s a traditional pantomime, and it’s funny, hopefully for the right reasons. The music will be good, and there will be plenty of audience participation.

“We’ve got a new dame, and several people for whom it’s their first venture into doing panto, or in fact going on stage.

“What we’ve always done, and pride ourselves on, is putting people on the stage who would never have gone there otherwise, and then they’re a revelation.

“We always get good audiences and we’d like to thank the people over the years that have supported us. All we want now is for the people to come along again and have a laugh, because I think we could all do with a jolly good laugh.”

Appearing in the pantomime will be new dame Andy Northey, along with Latoyah Egerton as principal boy, Beth Howarth as principal girl, Janet Sayers and Paul Collenette as the idiots Bawl and Shout, Ross Treleaven as Tickles the jester, Megan Stagg as the fairy Azuriel, Carol Hawkins as Carabosse, Andy Linney as Fusspot the chamberlain, John Heywood as King Cedric, and Marlene herself as Queen Semolina.

This will be the last chance to see a TADS pantomime for two years, with the next one not scheduled until 2014 – but TADS is instead promising a special Christmas spectacular for next year.

Tickets for the pantomime cost £8 for adults and £4 for under-16s, and are available from Westaways in Fore Street.

TADS is still looking for volunteers to help out with off-stage roles at this year’s pantomime, and is also looking for singers to take part in a large musical concert in the spring, for which any singers “would be very welcome”.
