A homeless man who attacked his girlfriend in a tent on a cliff top in Exmouth has received a suspended jail sentence.
Sean Stone trapped victim Amy-Leigh Drew inside the tent where they were living after they both got drunk while watching the World Cup in a pub; he pinned her down with his knees on her chest as he partially strangled her.
Stone, now of Smythen Street, Exeter, admitted causing actual bodily harm and was jailed at Exeter Crown Court for ten months, suspended for two years, with 20 days supervision.
Recorder Mr Jeremy Wright ordered Stone to go on a ‘building better relationships’ course and made him subject of a restraining order banning any contact with the victim for five years.
He told Stone: “I have seen the photographs and the injury is very nasty. Even if you were angry, it is a very serious matter. It was a sustained assault and there was no good reason. There is never a good reason to behave as you did.”
The court heard how Stone’s victim was left with a black eye and swollen face after he punched her during the attack.
The couple argued after going on a pub crawl in Exmouth to celebrate England’s victory over Tunisia in their first group game of the tournament.
Mr Herc Ashworth, prosecuting, said Stone and the victim had been in a relationship for about six months and were living together in a tent on cliffs at Exmouth.
They had both been drinking on the night before the attack and had argued as they moved from one pub to another.
Stone attacked her after they returned to the tent, pinning her down and putting his hands around her throat.
She suffered a black eye when he punched her and reported the attack to police when prompted by her employer the next day.
Mr Ashworth said: “During the attack she screamed and tried to push him away. She tried to get away but could not get out of the tent. He knelt on her chest and grabbed her throat and she was unable to breathe.
“She recalls him saying he was going to pummel her and kick the s*** out of her.
“This was a sustained assault on a vulnerable victim in an isolated location.”
