Exmouth has a higher sign-up rate for new organ donors than any other town in the country thanks to the hard work of a campaigning father.
Since June 2012 Steve Gazzard has signed up 1,760 people to the NHS organ donor register, writes David Beasley.
Every weekend Steve stands in Exmouth town centre in a bid to boost the numbers in memory of his daughter Sarah Wright.
Sarah was on the transplant list, but died in 2012 because of a serious lung condition – her organs were used to save the lives of at least three other people.
Steve said: “I have been told by the British Lung Foundation that more people in Exmouth have signed up than in any other town in the country.
“I am really proud of what we have achieved and it is a huge tribute to Sarah – she died that others could live.
“We still have a long journey ahead of us but we will continue to be out every week in all weathers to get even more people to make that life-changing decision and become an organ donor. Thanks to everyone who has supported the campaign.”
The South West as a whole now has the highest sign-up rate in the country – 37 per cent of the South West’s population are signed up as organ donors.
Steve can be found in the Magnolia Centre most weekends signing people up to the register.
