Steps sealed off for urgent work

Steps in Manor Gardens

Steps in The Manor Gardens have been closed off by council workers after the brick-lined ballustrade crumbled.

The steps link Chapel Hill to the rear of the Manor Gardens, beside the public toilets.

A spokesman for East Devon District Council said that they were aware that there was a problem and added: “For safety reasons, the gate at the top of the steps has been locked and the pathway leading to the steps has been fenced off to ensure that the public are not able to gain access.

“The council apologises for any inconvenience this essential closure may cause while the gardens are especially busy.

“There are a number of alternative ways into and out of the gardens.

“A contractor will be on the scene as soon as possible to assess the damage and we will then arrange for repairs to be carried out.

“At this stage it is too early to estimate the cost of repairing the brickwork.”
