THIS weekend residents get another chance to visit a private garden in the Avenues for charity.

Pat Attard is once again hosting ‘Soup and Snowdrops’ at Littleham House Cottage, 11 Douglas Avenue, from noon to 3.30pm this Sunday, February 16.

For eight years now Pat has opened her garden to raise money for charity through the National Garden Scheme.

She says that the hardy nature of snowdrops means that despite the dismal and windy weather her displays of 40 varieties of snowdrops and early spring flowers are ‘looking wonderful’.

The very first snowdrop flowered on December 20 and the first primrose and daffodil on January 14.

She said: “The snowdrops are multiplying wonderfully; the one main border is full of well established different types accompanied by white hellebores in flower and the other deeper shades in full bud.

“This year we have added more new varieties and extended those that we already had along two full length pathways. The pond area has had an extensive renovation and is also the proud home of four new ‘specials’’.

The central mulberry tree border is packed with the delightful early Crocus Tommasinius, primroses and the newly acquired varieties from Margaret Lloyd at Little Cumbre last year and all currently in full flower.

And to keep you in good spirits Pat is serving hot soup and rolls as well as the usual refreshments. And to greet you at the entrance is the grand white Camellia noblissima in full, and impressive flower.

She added: “Do come and join with the nearly three thousand people who have over the past eight years seen this ‘secret’ garden tucked away in The Avenues, Exmouth. The garden was one of the first to be featured on television as part of the NGS publicity series Open Gardens in 2006. It has had articles in Amateur Gardening, Devon Life and was featured as one of 50 Spring gardens to visit over Easter in the Daily Telegraph.

l Refreshments Available, plants for sale, admission: £3.50, children: free.
