Exmouth-born soprano Rebecca Newman is returning to the town to raise awareness and funds for the RNLI.

The former Exmouth Community College student, who performed her first ever solo aged 14, is performing at Exmouth Pavilion on November 18 as part of her UK Coast to Coast tour.

The show will feature some of her latest songs – which Magnolia Centre shoppers have heard snippets when Rebecca promotes her tour by busking.

A donation raised from her performance will help fund Exmouth’s new lifeboat launch and recovery system for the Shannon Class boat – due to arrive in 2013.

The singer, who launched her career as a teenager and is now based in Yorkshire, said: “I spent many happy summer days on Exmouth and Shelly beaches when I was growing up, so I always knew what the RNLI stood for and how it was run by volunteers.

“When I moved to London with work at 21, I was surprised to find out how many people did not know the crew were volunteers or that the charity relied on the public donations to support its work.

“I hope to do my bit to bring awareness of the RNLI to a new audience and help inspire some fundraisers, lifeguards and crew of the future.

“Not only do I hope my tour raises money for the charity, but I also want to create awareness about their fantastic work.

“The crew are volunteers and bravely put their lives on the line to rescue people who get into difficulties around our coastlines.

“I’m very excited about the tour and single launch. I’ve worked hard to ensure that the right people are involved and that my debut single reflects the outstanding work of the RNLI.”

Rebecca will be joined on stage, by special guest, tenor Lance Vernon, from Exmouth, and the local Budleigh Salterton Male Voice Choir.

She is currently recording her debut single - a classical Italian version of My Heart Will Go On, (Il Mio Cuore Va) from the hit film Titanic.
