A former Topsham resident is hoping to entertain the masses after being accepted to audition for Britain’s Got Talent.

David Flatau, 83, began writing music for children when he worked as a primary school teacher, and has since seen his songs performed across the world, with his song Learn the Green Cross Code featured on television.

David, now of Exminster, is planning to sing his song The Little Matchgirl at his audition, having written it more than 40 years ago.

He said: “My friends kept nagging me saying I must go on the X Factor, which isn’t until next year, but while at the computer I thought I’d look at Britain’s Got Talent.

“I filled in all the forms and within 10 minutes I was accepted.”

David does not yet know where the audition will be held, but he hopes it will be in London or Newcastle as he has sons living there.

Since his audition was confirmed, he has received several messages of support, including from his former heart surgeon Usha Surampudi.

David said: “She told me ‘music is the wonderful medium that connects people across the generations, races and continents.

“Folks who are blessed with musical talent are God’s very own harbingers of peace and goodwill on earth’.

“I think there’s some truth in that, because I always feel good when I’m singing my songs.”
