An Exmouth man is taking on the London Marathon to celebrate his wife receiving the all-clear from cancer.

Simon Stone, 40, is running in the event on April 13 to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

He has never run a marathon before, but has been training intensely since September, before receiving the good news in December about wife Ciara.

Simon said: “My wife was diagnosed with cervical cancer five years ago and due to the skill of the NHS she has now passed the five-year marker and is now statistically known as a survivor.

“So, on this five-year marker, it feels a good time to take on a challenge and give something back.

“I also have family and work colleagues battling cancer, and have also lost work colleagues to cancer.

“So I am running for those who have fought, those who now fight, and those who no longer can.”

Simon and Ciara both work at Tesco, where they previously raised money for Cancer Research with a sponsored exercise bike ride, along with their children, Rachel and Dan.

Ciara, who was diagnosed following a routine smear test, said: “I was told I needed a biopsy as they had found something they thought was a tumour. Three weeks later I had a hysterectomy where they caught all of the tumour so I didn’t need to have chemo or radiotherapy.

“The children were small so we didn’t tell them – but in December, 2013, I had my all clear and we found out that Simon had got his place in the marathon, so the fundraising kicked in and that’s when we told the children about mum’s cancer and the reasons why we were fundraising.”
