Silent majority

12:30 24 February 2012

Councillor Tom Wright (Journal, February 16) is absolutely correct in saying, in regard to the ‘silent majority’ and the Longboat debate, “If they choose to remain silent, how can anyone know their views?”

Having spent time studying the science of research methods I concluded that, while ways exist to try to ascertain opinion, the only certain way of knowing what someone thinks is for him or her to express their opinion.

Every other means is open to question.

I hope that Cllr Wright will take time to convey his sound logic to his fellow East Devon district councillors who, at the time of Unlocking Exmouth, claimed that the ‘silent majority’ supported them.
