Shop opening pushed back

All the funding is in place for a brand new, bigger, better and permanent £85,000 East Budleigh community shop.

But because of legal delays with signing over the lease of the site, the likely opening has been pushed back until early in the new year.

It follows the news this week that two grants totalling £19,000 have been pledged to the project.

A total of £14,000 of that money has come from the Community Council of Devon, with £5,000 from East Devon District Council.

The funding has been put in place to help local village community buildings all around the county.

It follows £7,000 awarded in August by parish council chairman Steve Baker to help pay for a new permanent store.

That cash came from the village’s share of the profits following the sale of a car park at the top of Vicarage Road. The car park was then developed into Collins Park, and the money was invested.

Chairman of the shop’s committee, John Tresidder said: “We are absolutely delighted, and now all the funding is in place.

“The latest grants were dependent on the support from the community and us getting money from the parish. We have had 93 letters of support of this project.”

He added that once the lease was signed they could start the 13-week build on the site, which is on village hall land.

“The village hall is a charity and we are a not-for-profit organisation, so it’s a great partnership,” he said. “We have agreed terms with a local builder.

“We have a small contingency fund and we hope to reuse parts of the old shop where we can. We won’t waste money, but if we have to replace things we will.

“The shop will unlikely be open before the new year, but you never know – we might end up signing the lease this week. It is more important to do things right than to do things quickly.”
